conventionalism

<ethics, epistemology> technical term for a form of subjectivism (or relativism) which holds that truth, good, and beauty are merely a matter of social convention. Conventionalism is a social kind of subjectivistic theory (the usual understanding is that the word "convention" does not refer to the beliefs or values of individuals, only of groups). In popular meaning, however, conventionalism refers to a person's tendency to adhere to or have regard for what is customary (in thought or action). (References from logical positivism, nominalism, and subjectivism.)
