<political theory, political philosophy> <philosophy of history, communism, marxism, proletarian> in its original designation the term referred to the medieval "middle class" of shopkeepers and artisans. In Communist theory it refers to the capitalist class of owners of the means and forces of production which, as Marx recounts, is historically descended from this medieval middle class.
