<metaphysics, ontology, epistemology> metaphysical or cosmological position according to which reality is fundamentally made up only of indivisible particles, independent, extremely small, self-sufficient atoms (nothing more). According to atomism, a complete description of the universe might be given by specifiying the location and movements of all the atoms composing it. Democritus is the most notable ancient atomist. According to Leibniz monads are "the true atoms." Locke's corpuscular hypothesis is also a version of Atomism.
